Hesket Newmarket Brewery visit – What we learnt

On Saturday 4th July, the Drone Valley Brewery Committee visited the Hesket Newmarket Community Brewery in Cumbria, as we reported here.

Richard (from the brewery) and Julian (from the Old Crown Inn which runs in tandem with the brewery) kindly showed us around and answered our questions.

Some key lessons we took away:

– How to make best use of staff and voluntary labour

– The challenges of sales, deliveries and collections

– How profits are dealt with

– The opportunities that come from bottling the beer

– Who to bank with

The study visit was made possible by the kind support of the Plunkett Foundation and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. Special thanks to Beccy Murrell of Plunkett who accompanied us on the visit.
